FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Straight answers about the apostille process.

Still have questions?

In the vast majority of cases, no. You upload a clear color scan of your document, our licensed notary certifies that the printed copy is a true and accurate reproduction of the original, and the Secretary of State then issues the apostille on the notary-certified true copy.

The resulting apostilled document is legally recognized across Hague Convention countries for almost every common use case: dual citizenship, marriage abroad, visa or work-permit applications, school enrollment, foreign property transactions, and more.

The only time you would need to mail the physical original is if the receiving authority in your destination country specifically demands the original document itself, which is uncommon. If that applies, we offer an Original Document Apostille service and will guide you through it.

Learn more about our digital process →

Our process uses a U.S.-licensed notary public who reviews your uploaded scan and certifies that a printed copy made from that scan is a true and accurate reproduction of the original document. The Secretary of State then issues the apostille on that notary-certified true copy. The apostille authenticates the notary's seal and signature, which is exactly what the Hague Convention recognizes. Because we work from a scan, your original never has to leave your possession, processing is significantly faster than mailing documents back and forth, and there is no risk of your originals being lost or damaged in transit.
Usually no. Public documents (birth certificates, marriage certificates, death certificates, diplomas and transcripts from accredited institutions, FBI background checks, certified corporate filings) are issued by a government body or registrar and can be apostilled directly without additional notarization. Private documents that carry a signature block, for example a power of attorney, affidavit, sworn statement, or contract, do need to be notarized first, because the apostille is issued on the notary's certification rather than on the document itself. If your document needs notarization, our Remote Online Notary or Mobile Notary add-ons handle it as part of your order.
An apostille is a certificate issued by a designated authority (usually the Secretary of State) that authenticates a U.S. document for use in countries that are members of the Hague Apostille Convention.
Processing times depend on the tier you choose. Economy Standard takes 4–6 business days, Standard Priority takes 2–3 business days, and Priority Express is processed within 1 business day. Federal apostilles take 6–14 business days and cannot be expedited.
Over 120 countries that are members of the Hague Apostille Convention accept apostilles. This includes most of Europe, South America, and many countries in Asia and Africa. If your destination country is not a member, you may need embassy legalization instead.
Most U.S.-issued documents can be apostilled, including birth certificates, marriage certificates, death certificates, diplomas, transcripts, corporate documents, powers of attorney, FBI background checks, and more.
Apostille processing starts at $149 per document for economy. We also offer priority and express tiers. All pricing includes document review and tracked shipping.
