Why is the apostille from a different state than my document?

With our digital process, the apostille is issued by the Secretary of State where our notary is commissioned, not the state where your original document was issued. This is a standard part of the digital apostille workflow and is fully compliant under the Hague Convention.

The apostille on your document is a valid, government-issued certificate from the Secretary of State, and it is accepted by receiving authorities in Hague Convention countries regardless of the state that originally issued the underlying document.

Need to send your physical original?

A small number of receiving authorities specifically require the apostille to be placed directly on the original document. If that is your situation, we offer an Original Document Apostille service. You mail us your original, we route it to the issuing state for direct apostille, and ship the completed document back.

True copy of the original: common questions

A true copy of the original is a reproduction that a notary or document custodian certifies to be a complete and accurate copy of the original document. The certification, signed and sealed, is what gives the copy legal standing. With our digital process, we print the scan you upload and our notary certifies it as a true copy of the original you hold.
They overlap but are not identical. A certified copy is issued by the office that holds the record (for example a vital records office issuing a certified birth certificate). A notarized true copy is certified by a notary or custodian rather than the issuing office. Both are public acts an apostille can authenticate; the notarized true copy is what we produce from your uploaded scan.
True copy attested means an authorized person, usually a notary, has formally declared in writing that the copy matches the original document. The attestation (the signed and sealed statement) is the public act that an apostille authenticates. So a true copy attested by a notary can carry an apostille and be recognized abroad.
Yes. A plain photocopy cannot be apostilled, but a notarized true copy can. The apostille authenticates the notary's signature and seal on the true copy certificate, which is a valid public act under the Hague Convention. This is exactly how our digital process works: you keep the original, we apostille a notarized true copy.
